What inspired me to learn how to play the piano?

Have you ever been mesmerised as you watched a pianist skilfully glide his/her fingers up and down the piano keys and wished you could play like that?

My favourite film is The Pianist... it's astonishing works of Frederic Chopin make my hairs stand to attention. This in turn inspired me to start thinking about learning to play the piano. Of course I had no idea where to start or what I was looking for. All I knew I was determined to learn the piano and find a programme/course that worked for me.

Knowing that one day, with enough determination and passion for this beautiful instrument, I could possibly dream of playing like Adrien Brody's character. The point being I had enough enthusiasm to push me forward and start thinking about the possibilities of playing the piano someday.

My starting point was think about a programme good enough and a programme I wouldn't lose interest in. I find with the best intentions people always quit after the novelty wears off. I knew this wouldn't happen to me once I make a decision, nine times out of 10, I usually follow through with it. plus I didn't want to let myself down.

Here a few simple tips on how to get started:

  • One of the first things I did was search the websites that compared, reviewed and analysed different programmes, I found that these websites offered an un-biased opinion about where I could find a programme that suited me. Personally, I like the idea of learning piano online. It offers flexibility and you can work around your commitments.
  • Secondly I couldn't afford a piano so I bought a second hand keyboard. Really consider purchasing a second hand keyboard for the low cost and convenience.
  • Lastly I looked for a course that had some great feedback from other learners who were starting out like me. The good news is there is a lot of material online that can help you and there are some great teachers, video demonstrations, ebooks, programmes/courses out there and they want to share their knowledge.
In the beginning I didn't find learning to play the piano so simple and I'm still trying to learn to play to this day but we all have to start somewhere so I hope with my simple suggestions you can go out and find some good information on learning to play the piano, purchase a second hand keyboard and find a programme that suits your lifestyle. Soon enough you will be well on your way to mastering this beautiful art.
